All real-world applications need to store configuration values somewhere outside their executable code so that their behavior can be modified without your having to recom pile them. Database connection strings are a typical example of such configuration val ues. Over the years, developers have adopted many different solutions to the problem of storing configuration information outside executable files, including using .ini files and the system registry. In an attempt to put some order in this area, Microsoft has proposed a standardized, simple, flexible way to store values in the application s configuration file. All configu ration values, which are formally known as dynamic properties, are stored as key/value pairs inside the <appSettings> section, as you see here:

Microsoft provides three techniques for distributing updates: the Windows Update client (built into Windows Vista), Windows Server Update Services (a free tool that can be installed on a Windows Server 2003 computer), and Systems Management Tool (an enterprise software distribution tool). These tools are designed for small, medium, and large organizations, respectively. You can install updates interactively using the Windows Update tool. This would be very time-consuming, however. Instead, you should configure Windows Update either using graphical tools or by using Group Policy settings. If you need to install updates immediately (for example, as soon as a user logs on), you can create scripts that install updates.

As Figure 32-3 shows, the Record Macro dialog box contains a Macro Name box. By default, Word provides a name for your macro, such as Macro1, Macro2, and so forth. This default naming scheme is very vague. Most likely, you ll want to associate a more descriptive name with your macro (and this practice is highly recommended). Fortunately, you can supply any name for your macro so long as you abide by the following guidelines:

The macro name must begin with a letter. The macro name can contain up to 80 letters and numbers. The macro name can t contain spaces or symbols.

If you type a macro name that s invalid, an error message will appear after you click OK, as shown in Figure 32-4. If you see this error message, click OK, and then choose Tools, Macro, Record New Macro to restart the macro creation process.

If you have a problem installing an update, you can diagnose the problem by viewing the Windows Update history, by analyzing the %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log file, or by examining WSUS logs. You can often resolve simple problems by restarting the Windows Update service. If you discover a compatibility problem after deploying an update, you can manually remove it or use WSUS to uninstall it.

If you give a new macro the same name as an existing macro or Word command, the new macro s actions will replace the existing macro s actions. You should be especially careful not to replace existing Word commands inadvertently. If you attempt to create a macro with the same name as an existing macro, Word will display a warning message box, asking whether you would like to replace the existing macro. At that point, you can click Yes to replace the existing macro or click No to return to the Record Macro dialog box (at which point you can enter a new name for your macro or click Cancel to halt the creation process).
