Figure 11.13 shows an XML file with the word Peace in different languages. This XML was converted to PDF using iText. In this example, you see different mechanisms at work: font selection, but also bidirectional writing and ligatures. If you try this example (named Peace) on your own system, you ll see that some translations for the word Peace are missing or wrong. If you see a question mark, it s because the translation is unknown. You ll also find a question mark in the XML file. (If you know the translation, feel free to post it to the iText mailing list.) If you see an empty space where a translation was expected, it s because the font selector couldn t find the glyph in any of the fonts that were added to the selector. When you re applying styles to your document, you have several tools that will help you. First, there is the Styles and Formatting task pane. To open it, click View Task Pane (or press Ctrl+F1). The task pane will appear in the right side of the Word window. Click the arrow at the top of the task pane and select Styles and Formatting. 11.5 Summary

In the sections that follow, various protocols supported by the Generic Connection Framework are examined using examples for each protocol. The example will demonstrate the ability to send and receive messages over a network connection. For simplicity, and ease of learning, the same implementation will be provided for HTTP, socket and datagram connections. The Generic Connection Framework is available in both the CDC and the CLDC configurations. For these examples, the MIDP will be used, which uses the CLDC at the configuration. Since the CLDC is completely nested inside the CDC, the GCF functionality in these examples will work for both configurations. We begin by examining HTTP. This example application will be expanded to illustrate sockets and datagrams later on in the chapter.
